The idea of an online multi-sport database, allowing athletes of all abilities to publish details of their competition and drug-test results, was first conceived in October 2002. A prototype database was launched on the European Powerlifting Federaton website in December 2003. This prototype evolved into the Athlete ID site, which officially went live in January 2004. The Athlete ID site was renamed Athlete Bio in March 2005.
